	Vector That Fox
Hello! That’s me in the top photo, looking at the mess I made. My preferred eventual demise sits below it. My human name is Jo Breese. Vector That Fox is something I had written on a to-do list for so long that it stuck. It now works as a brand / creative pseudonym for all the things I do. Magazine (formerly Britannica), Popshot Magazine, Standart Magazine, Firewords Magazine, Bristol University Press, The Monster Project, Wall Street Journal, and many more.

I also used to work as an in-house Illustrator / Graphic Designer for The Sunday Times, with weekly illustration features across the various sections and supplements, depending on the news. The job taught me to be very fast, and work well alongside many voices.

ILLUSTRATION INTERESTS

I particularly enjoy responding to articles when illustrating for magazines / newspapers; creating artwork for book covers, posters, merchandise; and, more generally, anything that involves drawing things with sharp teeth. Please do invite me to try other things too, though!

	Clash of the Dinosaurs, for What on Earth! Magazine

The front cover image, and 4 spreads of internal illustrations, for the dinosaur issue of What on Earth! Magazine.&#38;nbsp;
The magazine audience is typically 7-9 year olds, so the aim from the team was to make the artwork and pages really bold and colourful, taking inspiration from classic comics.&#38;nbsp;


Cover image
The brief for the cover illustration was to create an homage to 1960s Godzilla posters, featuring a kaiju-esque menagerie of dinosaurs bursting outward from a central T. Rex. Originally the design featured a background volcano, but it was taken out for the final cover in favour of a punchy orange.

BIG FIGHTThe classic head-to-head between a Tyrannosaurus Rex and a Triceratops from the Late Cretaceous, Hell Creek Formation. I decided (because we didn’t want to show any actual gore or blood), to use a ‘Dutch tilt’ view point, to add drama. The colourings of the dinosaurs are loosely inspired (accidentally, initially) by the Toy Story dinosaurs, Rex and Trixie.&#38;nbsp;


Scale&#38;nbsp;
The magazine wanted a page dedicated to focusing on the ridiculous scale some dinosaurs got to, and suggested Spinosaurus and a sauropod. I pitched for the Jurassic Period giant, Giraffatitan; to allow for child-friendly comparisons to modern giraffes. I also suggested we show the Spinosaurus diving, to give the dinosaurs a kind of yin-yang layout quality in the spread.&#38;nbsp;

Herbivore variety
This page was going to become Top Trumps style playing cards, showing off some of the bizzare evolutionary features found amongst herbivores. We chose Stegosaurus for the plates, Styracosaurus for the head frill and horns, hadrosaurs Olorotitan and Lambaosaurus, for the array of head crests, and Therizinosaurus for it’s massive claws (and general weirdness). I drew the dinosaurs as isolated spots for the design to build information-filled card graphics for.

The herd
The final spread was to show how dinosaurs worked together, as herds and as predators. I pitched a Late Cretaceous forest, featuring species found in 


Dinosaur Park Formation Alberta. It shows a herd of Parasaurolophus being watched by a pack of Dromaeosaurs and a lone Gorgosaurus in the distance.

	PROJECT HAIL MARY
A set of 3 illustrations for a private commission, illustrating scenes from the book Project Hail Mary, by Andy Weir.&#38;nbsp;Disclaimer: This illustration project was undertaken in early 2024, well before any concepts or information for the 2026 film release were visible, and the artwork is based solely on descriptions from the original text, and through conversations with the client.
Shelf Reflection describes the plot: “In Project Hail Mary, a science teacher [Ryland Grace] and his BFF alien buddy [Rocky the Eridian] science and engineer the crap out of space stuff to save their planets from a star-eating microbe.”
The three key scenes that were chosen from the roughs were: &#38;nbsp;
• The two lead characters, Grace and Rocky, in the zero-gravity airlock tunnel, starting to communicate through the clear divider, sharing their respective clocks&#38;nbsp;• Grace dragging Rocky through an upside down space ship lab&#38;nbsp;• Grace in his final Eridian classroom setting
Designing RockyTo create reference for myself in drawing a pentagonal, rock-like space spider floating in zero gravity, I thought it would be smart to “learn” how to 3D model. Using Nomad Sculpt and Blender, I created a simple model (well, about 8) and armature so I could pose it for whatever scene I had in mind. 
The actual Eridians wear clothes, and have details like vents and a raised head area, but for the reference model I just needed the physical characteristics and proportions. Because I also needed to draw the classroom for the young Eridians, I ended up obsessively product designing for how pentagonal, rock-like space spiders might sit and use a desk. Below are a few moments from this process.&#38;nbsp;

	The Mysterious Police Car
For Guide Magazine, a full-page editorial illustration, plus two half pages, to accompany a 3-part story. 
The plot follows a family on a 2 hour walk, along rural road, who rest momentarily under a big old tree for shade. The oldest child finds something uneasy about the area. 
On the return journey, as the moon appears from the clouds, two knife-weilding men are hidden in the big old tree. Luckily, a mysterious police car appears at the perfect moment...
